What is powdered cocaine?

Powdered cocaine (cocaine hydrochloride) is a stimulant derived from the leaves of the South American coca plant. Cocaine was used as an anaesthetic in the late 1800s, but the availability of safer drugs rendered many of its medical applications obsolete. Powdered cocaine is now abused because of the intense euphoric effects it produces.

What does it look like?

Cocaine is typically sold to users as a fine, white, crystalline powder.

How is powdered cocaine abused?

Powdered cocaine is typically snorted (inhaled through the nose)illicit drug, but it can also be dissolved in water and injected. The drug is absorbed into the bloodstream via the nasal membranes when snorted. Within 3 to 5 minutes, the drug reaches the brain and produces the euphoric effect. When injected, the drug is released directly into the bloodstream and reaches the brain in 15 to 30 seconds.

Who uses the cocaine drug?

Cocaine is used by people of all ages; according to data from the National Household Survey on Drug Abuse, an estimated 27,788,000 U.S. residents aged 12 and older used a form of cocaine at least once in their lifetime.(Slightly more than 6 million of these individuals used crack cocaine.)

Powdered cocaine use among high school students is especially concerning. According to the University of Michigan’s Monitoring the Future Survey, 7% of high school seniors in the United States have used the drug at least once in their lifetime, and 2% have used it in the last month.

What are the risks?

Powdered cocaine is an extremely potent stimulant of the central nervous system. Individuals who use the drug may become agitated, irritable, and anxious. Powdered cocaine use can also cause constricted blood vessels, as well as increased temperature, heart rate, and blood pressure.

Cocaine use can also cause heart attack, respiratory failure, stroke, and seizures. Using cocaine while drinking alcohol is especially dangerous because it increases the euphoric effect of the cocaine and potentially increases the risk of sudden death.

Cocaine is a highly addictive drug sold buy drug dealers. Chronic cocaine users risk developing a tolerance to its effects. Many addicts report that as tolerance develops, they are unable to achieve the positive effects they experienced when they first started using the drug; as a result, they begin to use cocaine more frequently and in larger doses.

Cocaine users who inject the drug face additional risks, such as contracting HIV, hepatitis B and C, and other blood-borne viruses.

What is it called?

The most common names for powdered cocaine are blow, nose candy, nose powder, powder and white powder. (For more names, please see the Street Terms text box below.)

Overview

Coca, which is primarily grown in Colombia, Peru, and Bolivia, is a highly addictive drug that is processed in jungle laboratories where coca leaves are extracted to produce cocaine. Cocaine was commonly used as an anaesthetic in Western medicine until the early 1900s due to its numbing properties. However, cocaine resurfaced in the 1970s as an expensive, high-status, and heavily abused drug. Cocaine use increased across the United States as its forms evolved and it became more widely available and less expensive.

History:

Coca, or Erythroxylon coca, has been used as a medicine and stimulant in what is now Colombia, Peru, and Bolivia for over 4,000 years. European explorers in the 16th century took note of its existence and how it was used. People in South America chewed the leaves because they were thought to improve mood, aid digestion, and suppress appetites.

Until the mid-nineteenth century, coca cultivation and use were limited to the Andes mountain range in northwestern South America. Coca was not used in Western medicine until the late nineteenth century, when American pharmaceutical companies began to explore that part of the world for new medicines. Cocaine’s addictive and destructive properties became apparent within 30 years of its introduction as a pharmaceutical product, despite its initial reputation as a safe stimulant and nerve tonic.

When cocaine resurfaced in the 1970s, it was billed as the champagne of drugs because it was expensive, high-status, and said to have no serious consequences. The cost steadily decreased, and by the mid-1980s, six million Americans used it on a regular basis. Cocaine was gradually rediscovered to be highly addictive and dangerous, as evidenced by the death of college basketball star Len Bias in June 1986.

Cocaine is processed as a stimulant by the body due to its chemical makeup. Individuals may experience long-term health problems as their bodies begin to rely on the stimulant. These issues include stomach ulcers, severe depression, heart inflammation or palpitations, and lung bleeding. Cocaine can also impair brain function and the ability to regulate stress and mood.

Colombia now produces 70 to 80 percent of the world’s cocaine, which is made from locally grown coca plants and cocaine base imported from Peru and Bolivia. Colombia is estimated to produce 400 million dollars of cocaine each week.

Medical Use:

Cocaine is classified as a Schedule II controlled substance because it has medical applications and a high potential for abuse.

Cocaine has long been known for its quick numbing properties. As a result, many early medicines, such as toothache drops, nausea pills, and sinus pain pills, emphasised their pain-relieving abilities. The drug is still used as a local anaesthetic in medicine. It is occasionally used in medical procedures as a topical anaesthetic for skin lacerations, nose or throat surgeries, and dental procedure

Forms:

Coca Leaves: Coca plants thrive in humid, hot climates. flourish in countries such as Colombia and Peru.

Coca-Cola: In the late 1800s, cocaine was used as a primary flavouring ingredient in Coca-Cola. In the early 1900s, cocaine in its raw form was removed. Today, a de-cocainized extract of coca leaves is manufactured in the United States and used in Coca-Cola flavouring. Select pharmaceutical companies use the remaining crude cocaine for medicine.

Freebase Cocaine:In the late 1970s, freebasing, a method of smoking cocaine, coincided with an increase in cocaine misuse. The effects of freebasing are faster and more potent for the user, making this type of misuse more popular.

Crack: In the mid-1980s, crack emerged as a dangerous form of cocaine. Crack has a modified chemical structure that allows it to reach the brain faster and produce a more intense high, making crack more addictive. The term “crack” comes from the crackling sound this type of cocaine makes when burned.

Preparing Cocaine for Sale:Cocaine dealers commonly use a scale, razor blade, and sifter when preparing cocaine for sale on the streets.

The Effects of Cocaine on the Body

Cocaine is a stimulant, and its possible side effects include increased alertness, excitation, euphoria, increased pulse rate and blood pressure, insomnia, and loss of appetite. Overdosing on cocaine causes agitation, increased body temperature, hallucinations, convulsions, and death. The withdrawal symptoms may include apathy, long periods of sleep, irritability, depression, and disorientation.

Cocaine has been shown in studies to alter the formation or survival of new neurons in the hippocampus region of the adult brain, interfering with the process of new neuron growth. The formation of new neurons has been tentatively linked to learning and memory processes, as well as the regulation of stress and mood. Learning/memory and stress/mood regulation are both driving forces that guide addictive behaviours.

The Development of a Cocaine Vaccine

Many medications are being studied in order to develop an anti-addiction vaccine. The cocaine vaccine prevents the user from becoming high by tricking the immune system into producing antibodies. These antibodies bind to cocaine and prevent it from passing through the bloodstream and into the brain. This prevents the euphoric high that drives repeated use.

Colombia is the world’s largest producer of cocaine.

Cocaine is made from the leaves of the coca plant (Erythoxylon coca). The plant grows almost entirely in northern and western South America. Colombia is now the world’s leading producer of illegal cocaine, with significant amounts supplied by Peru, Bolivia, and Chile. The coca plant grows best in the mountain and jungle areas of these countries.

Small laboratories can be found throughout South America’s cocaine-producing regions. The hand-picked coca leaves are soaked in petrol and other chemicals in industrial-sized drums to extract the coca base from the leaves.

The foundation is then poured into brick moulds. The water is pressed out, leaving a hard, easy-to-handle brick containing approximately 50% cocaine. The bricks are delivered to collection points, from which they are shipped to markets in the United States and other countries.

Colombian drug cartels control almost all cocaine trafficking. They process coca from Peru, Bolivia, and Colombia. The cocaine is then shipped to various cocaine-trafficking organisations all over the world.

Cocaine Processing Labs

In these remote areas, processing laboratories are set up to extract cocaine from the leaves and then convert the cocaine into other drugs. There are two types of processing labs: pozo pit labs that use acidic solutions and the more common lab that uses metal drums and gasoline.

Step One: Cocaine is typically processed in jungle labs by first soaking leaves in petrol inside metal drums.

Step two: Cocaine alkaloids-containing petrol is drained from metal drums and filtered into a barrel with diluted acid. The petrol will be removed from the acid layer, and sodium bicarbonate or ammonia will be added to the solution to create cocainebase.

Step Three: Cocainebase is filtered through a cloth.

Step four: The remaining substance is dried, yielding a purer form of cocaine base.

Step 5: Cocainebase is dissolved in a solvent such as ethyl acetate, acetone, or ether and then heated in a hot water bath known as a “bao maria.” Another solvent, such as methyl ethyl ketone, is added to the boiling liquid along with concentrated hydrochloric acid, resulting in the crystallisation of cocaine hydrochloride.

Step Six: Excess solvents are removed from the cocaine hydrochloride, first by hand and then with a hydraulic press.

Step Seven: Solvents are finally removed using microwave ovens, resulting in powder cocaine.

Step 8: Cocainebase, also known as “crack,” is typically created by dissolving cocaine hydrochloride in a solution of water and baking soda. The solution is boiled until the cocaine forms an oily substance that drops out of the solution and settles at the bottom of the container.

Step Nine: Excess water, sodium chloride, and other impurities can be removed after cooling the oil to a rock-like substance. The resulting product is crack cocaine.
